Quillon Law successfully represents British national in revocation of UK sanctions designation

March 3, 2026

Quillon Law has successfully secured the revocation of the designation of British national Mr John Ormerod under the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019.

Mr Ormerod is one of only a few individuals sanctioned under the Russia Regulations to be de-listed to date.

Mr Ormerod, a British national living in London, was designated by the UK Government in May 2025.

Following detailed legal submissions made by Quillon Law as to the lawfulness of the decision to sanction Mr Ormerod, yesterday (2 March 2026) the UK Government revoked Mr Ormerod’s designation and removed him from the UK Sanctions List.

The Quillon Law team representing Mr Ormerod was led by Partners Abigail Healey and James Clark, with Managing Associate Jordan Hill, Associate Genevieve Douglas and Paralegal Lucia Cipolat. Quillon Law instructed Alex Haines of 4 Pump Court.

Speaking on this news, Mr Ormerod commented: “I am both relieved and delighted that the UK Government has decided to revoke my designation and remove me from the UK Sanctions List.

I am grateful to my legal team and the Foreign Office for their work in bringing this chapter to an end, and I look forward to enjoying my retirement with some peace and stability.

More importantly, my family and I will finally be able to return to living a normal life. They and also my friends have been amazing in their support over the last 10 months and I owe them everything.

To be clear, I wholeheartedly condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I urge others to be watchful, it is easy to be caught up unwittingly in the sanctions regime as I was.”

Abigail Healey, Partner at Quillon Law, commented: “As a British national living in London, Mr Ormerod’s designation had a profound impact on him, as well as his family. Despite licences being in place, he was effectively cut-off from all means of paying for even his most basic needs. I am delighted that we have succeeded in ensuring Mr Ormerod and his wife can now enjoy the rest of their retirement.”
